Hypoxia

(Submitter supplied) Systemic arterial smooth muscle cells are exposed to a broad range of oxygen concentrations under physiological conditions. Hypoxia can modulate the proliferative response of smooth muscle cells leading to speculation about its role in vasculogenesis, vascular remodelling and the pathogenesis of arterial disease. The effect of hypoxia has been inconsistent, however, with both enhanced proliferation and growth arrest reported. more...

Hypoxia effect on cultured aortic smooth muscle cells

Analysis of aortic smooth muscle cells incubated for 16 hrs or 48 hrs under hypoxic conditions (1% or 3%O2). Smooth muscle cell proliferation and survival are modulated by hypoxia. Results provide insight into molecular mechanisms underlying oxygen regulation of arterial smooth muscle cells.

Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor-2 is Induced by Fluid Shear Stress in Vascular Smooth Muscle

(Submitter supplied) Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor-2 is Induced by Fluid Shear Stress in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells and Affects Cell Proliferation and Survival Introduction: Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are exposed to fluid shear stress (FSS) after interventional procedures such as balloon-angioplasty. Whereas the effects of hemodynamic forces on endothelial cells are explored in detail, the influence of FSS on smooth muscle cell function is poorly characterized. more...
