Banded hedgehog effect on the pronephric nephron development

Analysis of pronephric explants dissected from embryos previously injected with banded hedgehog mRNA. Hedgehog suppresses the development of the pronephric kidney tubule but not that of the pronephric glomus. Results provide insight into the molecular basis of this inhibitory effect.

Bhh signaling in pronephric development

(Submitter supplied) Pronephric explants were dissected in the presence or absence of hedgehog signaling. Targets from pooled biological samples were examined in triplicate and the expression profiles were determined using Affymetrix Xenopus Genechip 1 arrays. Keywords: repeat

A comparative study of cellular diversity between the Xenopus pronephric and mouse metanephric nephron

Gene expression profiles in developing nephrons using Lim1 metanephric mesenchyme-specific conditional mutant mice

(Submitter supplied) BACKGROUND: Lim1 is a homeobox gene that is essential for nephrogenesis. During metanephric kidney development, Lim1 is expressed in the nephric duct, ureteric buds, and the induced metanephric mesenchyme. Conditional ablation of Lim1 in the metanephric mesenchyme blocks the formation of nephrons at the nephric vesicle stage, leading to the production of small, non-functional kidneys that lack nephrons. more...

Homeobox Lim1 mutant nephron-deficient kidneys

Analysis of embryonic day 14.5 and 18.5 kidneys from Lim1 conditional mutants. Lim1 is a homoebox gene that is essential for nephrogenesis. The mutant is ablated for Lim1 in the metanephric mesenchyme, resulting in nephron deficient kidneys. Results identify genes expressed in developing nephrons.

Lhx1 is required for specification of renal progenitor cell field

(Submitter supplied) The goal of this study is to investigate the molecular mechanism of lhx1 on regulation of pronephros formation during the early embryonic development. In the vertebrate embryo the kidney is derived from the intermediate mesoderm. The LIM-class homeobox transcription factor lhx1 is expressed early in the intermediate mesoderm and is one of the first genes to be expressed in the nephric mesenchyme. The animal cap cells can be induced by treatment of activin and retinoic acid to differentiate into pronephros tissue. more...

Regulation of kidney field specification by transcriptional regulation of microRNAs

(Submitter supplied) The transcriptional events driving specification of the kidney field have been well characterized. However, it remains unknown how the initial field size is established, patterned, and proportioned. Lhx1 is a transcription factor expressed in the kidney anlage and is required for specification of the kidney field, but few Lhx1 interacting cofactors or downstream targets have been identified. By tandem-affinity purification, we isolated Furry (FRY), a multifunctional protein that acts as a transcriptional co-repressor of microRNAs. more...
