Human Lacrimal Gland Gene Expression

(Submitter supplied) Background: The study of human lacrimal gland biology and development is limited. Lacrimal gland tissue is damaged or poorly functional in a number of disease states including dry eye disease. Development of cell based therapies for lacrimal gland diseases requires a better understanding of the gene expression and signaling pathways in lacrimal gland. Differential gene expression analysis between lacrimal gland and other embryologically similar tissues may be helpful in furthering our understanding of lacrimal gland development. more...

Characterization of immortalized human lacrimal gland epithelial cells in 2D and 3D cell culture models

(Submitter supplied) In humans, the lacrimal gland produces the aqueous component of the tear film, which e.g. moistens and nourishes the ocular surface to maintain ophthalmic health. Decreased production of the aqueous component leads to the development of dry eye disease, which affects over 250 million people worldwide. Despite the impact on patients, the availability of primary human material to study underlying disease mechanisms is severely constrained. more...

Gene Expression in the Human Lacrimal Gland

(Submitter supplied) Diagnosis of inflamed human lacrimal gland with standard clinical and histopathology evaluation data is imprecise. A large number of these patients are diagnosed with the catch-all classification of nonspecific orbital inflammation (NSOI). We utilized gene expression analysis of lacrimal gland biospy/surgical waste tissues to assist in the classification of sarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), thyroid eye disease (TED), and subdivisions of NSOI. more...

A time course microarray study of gene expression in the mouse lacrimal gland after acute corneal trauma.

(Submitter supplied) Examine the effect of stimulation stress produced by chemical burn to the mice cornea in the lacrimal gland over a time course (0.5 - 360 hours) in comparison with the non-stimulated control animals. Using silver nitrate applicator (silver nitrate 37.5 mg and potassium nitrate 12.5 mg, Graham-Field,Inc.,) do two burns per eye, each with a separate applicator. For animals observed for more than 24 hours, eyes were then treated with gentamicin ointment to minimize infection. more...

Estrogen's and progesterone's impact on gene expression in the mouse lacrimal and meibomoan gland.

(Submitter supplied) PURPOSE: The hypothesis tested in the study was that the effect of estrogen and progesterone on the lacrimal gland is mediated through specific receptors and that hormonal effects involve the regulation of gene expression and protein synthesis. METHODS: Lacrimal glands were collected from young adult, ovariectomized mice, that were treated with 17beta-estradiol, progesterone, 17beta-estradiol plus progesterone or vehicle for 2 weeks. more...
