Identification of differentially expressed small RNAs and prediction of target genes in Italian Large White pigs with divergent backfat deposition

(Submitter supplied) The identification of the molecular mechanisms regulating pathways associated to the potential of fat deposition in pigs can lead to the detection of key genes and markers for the genetic improvement of fat traits. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) interactions with target RNAs regulate gene expression and modulate pathway activation in cells and tissues. In pigs, miRNA discovery is well far from saturation and the knowledge of miRNA expression in backfat tissue and particularly of the impact of miRNA variations are still fragmentary. more...

MicroRNAs Expression Profiles Differ between Primary Myofiber of Lean and Obese Pigs breeds

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding small miRNA ~22 nucleotides in length and play a vital role in muscle development by binding to messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Large White (LW, a lean type pig) and Meishan pigs (MS, a Chinese indigenous obese breed) have significant postnatal phenotype differences in growth rate, muscle mass and meat quality, and theses difference are programmed during prenatal muscle development. To shed directly light on the miRNA transcriptome difference in prenatal muscles between these two distinct pig breeds. more...

Gene expression profiling of thymus samples from myasthenia gravis patients.

(Submitter supplied) Autoimmune myasthenia gravis (MG) is characterized by thymic abnormalities such as hyperplasia and thymoma. Thymus plays an important role in self-tolerance and is involved in initiation and progression of the disease. A large proportion of MG patient show the presence of ectopic germinal centers (GC) in thymus that are absent in normal individuals. However, the exact mechanism how this change in thymus morphology is triggered and if this is related to pathophysiology of the disease remains unknown. more...

Differences in gene expression profiles for subcutaneous adipose, liver, and skeletal muscle tissues between Meishan and Landrace pigs with different backfat thicknesses

(Submitter supplied) Backfat thickness is one of the most important traits of commercially raised pigs. Meishan pigs are renowned for having thicker backfat than Landrace pigs. To examine the genetic factors responsible for the differences, we first produced female crossbred pig lines by mating Landrace (L) × Large White (W) × Duroc (D) females (LWD) with Landrace (L) or Meishan (M) boars (i.e., LWD × L = LWDL for Landrace offspring and LWD × M = LWDM of the Meishan offspring). more...

miRNA-seq expression profiling of Huntington's Disease and neurologically normal human post-mortem prefrontal cortex (BA9) brain samples

(Submitter supplied) BACKGROUND MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that recognize sites of complementarity of target messenger RNAs, resulting in transcriptional regulation and translational repression of target genes. In Huntington’s disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disease caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion, miRNA dyregulation has been reported, which may impact gene expression and modify the progression and severity of HD. more...

Serum microRNA screening and functional studies reveal miR-483-5p as a potential driver of fibrosis in systemic sclerosis

(Submitter supplied) To investigate the miRNA signature in the serum of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. The levels of 758 miRNAs were evaluated in the serum of 26 SSc patients as compared to 9 healthy controls by using an Openarray platform. Patients fulfilling the ACR/EULAR 2013 classification criteria were classified in relation to the extent of skin fibrosis as limited cutaneous (lcSSc) or diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc); patients fulfilling the classification criteria without skin fibrosis will be referred to as non-cutaneous SSc (ncSSc). more...

Identification and analysis of circRNAs in the prefrontal cortex of wild boar and domestic pig

(Submitter supplied) Domestication caused significant differences in morphology and behavior between wild and domestic animals, and gene expression changes played an important role in this event. circRNA is a class of non-coding RNA that exerts a wide range of functions in biological processes through the regulation of gene expression. However, the regulatory role of circRNA in the process of domestication is still unclear. more...

Small RNA sequencing reveals new mode of action and potential biomarkers for the mycotoxin Zearalenone

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: The mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEN) poses a risk to animal health because of its estrogenic effects. Diagnosis of ZEN-induced disorders in animal production remains challenging due to the lack of appropriate non-invasive biomarkers. Thus, we combined untargeted and targeted transcriptomics approaches to investigate the effects of ZEN on the microRNA expression in porcine uterus, jejunum and serum. more...

MiRNA expression profiles from adult mouse frontal cortex and hippocampus

(Submitter supplied) MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small regulatory molecules that cause post-transcriptional gene silencing. Although some miRNAs are known to have region-specific expression patterns in the adult brain, the functional consequences of the region-specificity to the gene regulatory networks of the brain nuclei are not clear. Therefore, we studied miRNA expression patterns by miRNA-seq in two brain regions, frontal cortex (FCx) and hippocampus (HP), which have separate biological functions. more...
