The effect of breed and diet on the liver transcriptome of beef steers divergent in RFI

(Submitter supplied) The objective of this work was to investigate differential gene expression of Charolais (n=90) and Holstein Freisian (n=77) steers divergent in RFI. The primary goal was to uncover genes and pathways associated with feed efficiency. Cattle were subjected to three different 70 day dietary phases. Initally animals were offered a high concentrate phase, termed "High Concentrate 1". Following this phase animals were offered sero grazed grass for 70 days followed by another high concentrate phase known as "High Concentrate 2". more...

RNA-Seq-based transcriptome profiling of primary interstitial cells of Cajal derived from the small intestine of Merino sheep in response to bovine viral diarrhea virus infection

(Submitter supplied) Infections with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) contribute significantly to health-related economic losses in the beef and dairy industries and are widespread throughout the world. Severe acute BVDV infection is characterized by a gastrointestinal (GI) inflammatory response. The mechanism of inflammatory lesions caused by BVDV remains unknown. The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) network plays a pivotal role as a pacemaker in the generation of electrical slow waves for GI motility, and it is crucial for the reception of regulatory inputs from the enteric nervous system. more...

(Submitter supplied) The objective of this study was to identify differentially expressed genes in the liver of steers with divergent Residual Feed Intake (RFI). Methods:In total 50 purebred Angus, 48 purebred Charolais and 158 Kinsella Composite breed steers were tested for individual feed intake using the GrowSafe system for an average period of 70 to 73 days. During the feedlot test animals were fed at ad libitum with a finishing diet composed of 75% barley grain, 20% barley silage and 5% rumensin pellet. more...

Transcriptome profile of liver at different physiological stages in laying hens

(Submitter supplied) In this study, RNA-Seq technology was adopted to investigate the differences in expression profiles of the hepatic lipid metabolism-related genes and the associated pathways between juvenile and laying hens. RNA-Seq analysis was carried out to estimate total RNA harvested from the liver of juvenile hens (n = 3) and laying hens (n = 3). Compared with juvenile hens, 2574 differentially expressed (DE) genes (1487 down and 1087 up) with P ≤ 0.05 were obtained, and 955 of these genes were significantly DE (SDE) at a false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.05 and fold-change ≥ 2 in laying hens. more...

Comparing the transcriptomes of ovaries from prolific Jintang black goat and non-prolific Tibetan goat (Capra hircus) during follicular phase

(Submitter supplied) The present study, for the first time, compared the transcriptomes of ovaries from the prolific Jintang black goat and the non-prolific Tibetan goat during follicular phase using the Illumina RNA-Seq method. The study provides insight into the transcriptional regulation in the ovaries of two distinct breeds of goats that might serve as a key resource for understanding goat fecundity.

Hepatic transcriptome response to high dietary cholesterol intake in pig NAFLD model

(Submitter supplied) The mechanisms by which cholesterol promotes NAFLD remain far less clear. Animal models are necessary to explore the pathogenesis and therapies of NAFLD. Several previous studies have shown that pig breeds can differ in their metabolic phenotype in response to high-energy diet. To investigate whether genetic background has profound effects on pig NAFLD phenotype and their metabolic response to dietary cholesterol intake, we performed RNA-Seq on liver tissues from two miniature pig breeds fed either standard or a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet for 6 months.

Liver functional genomics in beef cows on grazing systems

(Submitter supplied) We evaluated liver transcriptome throughout gestation and early lactation of purebred and crossbred beef cows (Angus, Hereford and their F1 crossbreeds, CR), grazing high or low herbage allowances (HA) of native grasslands (4 and 2.5 kg DM/kg BW annual mean; n = 16) using an Agilent 4x44k bovine array. A total of 4,661 transcripts were affected by days (272 ≥ 2.5-fold difference, FDR ≤ 0.10) and 47 pathways were altered during winter gestation (-165 to -15 days relative to calving, d). more...
