Expression data of HNSCC cell lines grown without and with patient-matched CAFs in 2D

(Submitter supplied) Cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are the major cellular component of the tumor microenvironment and they have been shown to stimulate tumor growth, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), invasion and radio-resistance. We used microarrays to investigate the influence of CAFs on the gene expression profile of HNSCC cells in 2D co-cultures

Differential effect of cancer-associated fibroblasts on HNSCC progression: Cancer Promotion or inhibition

(Submitter supplied) To study of differential effect on cancer-associated fibroblasts of HNSCC, we have employed microarray expression profiling. The critical effect of the tumor microenvironment to caner progression is well recognized. Recent research suggests that the cancer-promoting properties of the tumor stroma may attributed to fibroblasts. However, little is known about fibroblasts that inhibit cancer progression. more...

Desmoplasia is associated with carcinoma associated fibroblasts’ heterogeneity in non-small cell lung cancer patients

(Submitter supplied) Cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are well known to strongly influence tumor development, progression, and metastasis. Their characteristics and prognostic gene signature in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients have been recognized. Heterogeneity of CAFs has long been observed, however, the functional heterogeneity of CAFs between patients and their genetic basis are far less known. Here, we report the distinction of two CAF subtypes obtained from primary cultures of CAFs and matched normal fibroblasts (NFs) from 28 resected NSCLC. more...

Deregulated MicroRNAs in Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts from Front Tumor Tissues of Lung Adenocarcinoma as Potential Predictors of Tumor Promotion

(Submitter supplied) Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote tumor progression through several mechanisms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a key role in CAFs tumor-promoting properties, however, their role in CAFs from different topological areas in lung cancer progression remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the miRNA expression profile of fibroblasts isolated from matched tumor front (F-CAFs), inner tumor (In-CAFs), and normal adjacent tissue (NFs) in lung adenocarcinoma, using microarray analysis and RT-qPCR. more...

RHBDF2 in Stromal Fibroblasts Mediates TGF-b Signal and Enhances Cancer Cell Invasion via Intercellular Cross-Talk

(Submitter supplied) Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) existing in tumor stroma play a crucial role in tumor progression. Here, we show that stromal fibroblasts near cancer cells are likely to display up-regulated RHBDF2 expression caused by chronic stimulation from pro-inflammatory cytokines. RHBDF2 promotes both the cleavage of type I transforming growth factor (TGF)-b receptor, through tumor necrosis factor α converting enzyme activation, and the motility of CAFs upon stimulation with TGF-b1. more...

Functional heterogeneity of cancer-associated fibroblasts from human colon tumors shows specific prognostic gene expression signature

(Submitter supplied) Tumor growth and metastasis is controlled by paracrine signaling between cells of the tumor microenvironment and malignant cells. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), are functionally important components of the tumor microenvironment. Although some steps involved in the cross-talk between these cells are known, there is still a lot that is not clear. Thus, the addition of, the consideration of microenvironment in the development of the disease, to the clinical and pathological procedures (currently admitted as the consistent value cancer treatments) could lay the foundations for the development of new treatment strategies to control the disease.
